The Octopus League kicks off again with Round 1 being held on Sat 16th Jan, the same weekend as the Sutton Borough Championships which is on Sun 17th Jan at Westcroft Leisure Centre. Swimmers aged 8 and above can enter this gala by completing the following form by Thursday 7th Jan. More information about the championships in this word document. Dear all, I hope you all had a great swimming year with us last year, we are very proud of our club and you have all achieved so much, topped off with our reigning title in the Octopus League.
I hope you all enjoy the Christmas break and a reminder we're back swimming from Monday 4th January 2016.
A polite reminder that the annual membership fees will be due in January. It's £50 a swimmer ( excluding those in the teaching pools). If you have more than one child, your second child is £45, third £40 etc. We have agreed as a committee to keep the membership fees the same as last year, and also the monthly subscription has not increased at all either. For one swim a week it's £22/month, for two it's £33/month, three or more it's £39/month. Please can I ask that you reset up your standing orders for 2016. Forms are available at the desks. We can now confirm all the details for the presentation evening and club disco for 9th January. It will be held at the Cheam Sports Club, Peaches Close, Cheam. It will start at 7.30pm, with presentations of the trophies for the winners of this years Club championships, then a presentation to our special guests, Ann and Dennis Griffiths who I am sure you'll be as pleased as us to see again and to give fitting thanks and send off following their many years of time, commitment and dedication to our club.
Tickets will be on sale on the door and on the desks before the events priced at adults £5, children under 16 £3 and a family (2 adults, 2 children) £15. There is a bar there and a disco till 11pm. We sincerely hope you will come and join us.
There will be races in all strokes for all ages. Please download the session times and race details.
Swimmers will need to be changed and ready poolside for the start of the warm-up for each session, i.e. 4pm for Session 1 and 6.30pm for session 2.
Please ensure they have goggles, club hat, a T-shirt to wear poolside and spare towel. There will be an entry fee of £1 per adult spectator (children free) - please pay at the desk which will be situated at the entry to the viewing gallery.
There will also be a raffle.

Cheam Marcuda Swimmers celebrated in style winning round 6 and are this years overall winners.
There were some excellent performances from all the swimmers in the individual and team relays, which surged Cheam into 1ST PLACE. However the other 7 clubs weren't going to make it easy, so there were some impressive finishes from all.
The swimmers just went from strength to strength, as the night went on, and in return they were rewarded with PBs and the win.
A big "Thank You" to all the coaches on their hard work throughout the year, poolside helpers and parents. A special "Thank You" must go to Anne and Dennis, who helped start up and run the Octopus League in its early days through to 2015.
With the 2016 League starting in the New Year, let's make it 3 in row.

Over the last few months Cheam Marcuda swimmers have been completing in this league against 7 other clubs from the surrounding area and Kent.
The Octopus League is a time-restricted gala for swimmers aged between 9 and 18 year. If a swimmers becomes to fast for their age group a new swimmers is asked to swim.
With some great performances and plenty of PB’s, Cheam Marcuda have stayed in 1st place throughout the league. In round 1, Marcuda swimmers took first place, rounds 2 and 3 just being beaten into 2nd place.

This gala is open to swimmers of any age (no minimum age, as long as swimmers can complete 1 full length). Winners of any event in the 2014 Turnbull Gala or our Club Championships cannot enter, you can download below a list of swimmers who are ineligible. Could these swimmers please return the trophies from last year, promptly to the desk on any swimming evening.
This gala is a great opportunity for the children to compete in a friendly competition, 1 length races in all strokes, cost is £1 per race, swimmers can enter a maximum of 2 races. Trophies awarded for 1st place in each race/age group and medals for top 3.
To enter, please complete an entry form at the desk or download and print one below. Alternatively please email firstname.lastname@example.org with your child's name, date of birth and races that they would like to enter.
We are also looking for a number of volunteers (parents & older children) to assist with the running of the gala, no previous gala experience is necessary. Please email email@example.com if you are able to help out.
This gala will take place on Sunday 12th of July and is being funded by the Sutton Swimming Association so entry is free. Minimum of age of swimmers is 8 years of age on the day of the event. The programme includes 50m and 100m races in all strokes, plus 100m IM and 200m freestyle races. We will submit all entries for our club in a batch by the closing date. Now in its 8th year, with 23 clubs and around 331 swimmers completing in this years Vanessa Knight Open. It was an early start for some, with the doors opening at 8 o'clock.
This is a graded "A","B" and "C" open, with 9 medals in each age group.
After the warm-up it was time to race. Event 1, 50m Back saw Libby, Lauren, Charlotte and Maegan completing, all 4 girls swam well and all gained PB's. The first medal of the day came from Jordan in the 50m Freestyle taking bronze "C". In the 50m Breaststroke Libby came 2nd "B" and Maegan 1st "B".
With most of the swimmers in session 1 racing between 4 and 6 races, there wasn't must time to sit down before being called for the next event.
In event 7, 50m Butterfly Lauren took the bronze "C" grade, and Libby in event 11 took the final medal of the morning session in the 100m IM Gold "B".
Session 2 was even more successful for the team, with the older girls, Keely, Isobel, Sachi, Shantel and Hallie and for the younger boys Mitch swimming. Shantel presented the team with their first medal of the afternoon in the 50m Freestyle, silver "B". Next saw Hallie in the 50m Butterfly Gold "B", and Mitch in the 100m IM "B" bronze. Once again as soon as the swimmer sat down they called to race, but there was no stopping them.
In the girls 100m IM Hallie won the silver "B" and Isobel the "C" bronze medal. Next medals came from both Hallie "A" Gold and Isobel "B" Bronze in the 50m Breaststroke, and then again from Isobel in the Backstroke 50m winning "B" Bronze. Mitch won the final medal of the afternoon session in the 200m Freestyle "B" silver. Ending that days total for the team at 3 x Gold, 5 x Silver and 6 x Bronze, 14 medals total.
Well done Team.

There was a good turn out by Cheam Marcuda swimmer for the 6th Woking Octopus Meet. For some this was a 7.30 am start. The standard of this Open is always very high, with many clubs and swimmers taking part in all age groups.
Awards are made to the first 3 swimmers in each age group entered in the "B" and "C" grades.
Most swimmers gained PB's and times towards the Surrey Development Meet in June.

In total the swimmers won 24 glass trophies across the grades. Well done Cheam Marcuda swimmers.

There were plenty of great swims from a 2 girl team from Cheam.
Libby and Lauren between them bought home 6 medals and 6 ribbons.
Libby took the first gold medal of the day in the 50m freestyle in a time of 33.74, with Lauren coming 5th to take the ribbon. With both girls wanting to do their very best, the times just kept on falling. 11 out of the 12 swims were PB's.
The next medal went to Lauren, silver in the 50m butterfly and Libby bronze. Libby them took another silver in the 200m freestyle, 6th 50 backstroke, 5th 100 IM and silver in the 100m freestyle.
Lauren came 8th in the 200m freestyle, 8th 50 backstroke, 7th 100 IM, and ending the day with a bronze in the 100m freestyle.
With points being scored throughout the day, in every race, Cheam Marcuda came 6th overall in the team points.

Our AGM this year will take place at Westcroft in the canteen at 8pm - 9pm on the above date.
This is an important opportunity for you to have your say as to the progress and future direction of our club and allows a forum for parents to put forward their views on our future.

On Saturday 18th April 4 members from Cheam Marcuda took part in this Open Meet held in Aldershot. The pool at Aldershot Garrison is 50 metres long, which made it a great opportunity to get some personnel best times from all 4 swimmers.
Session 1 saw Hallie and Lauren taking part. Lauren won the bronze in the 200m Breaststroke and Hallie winning the silver.
In session 2, the girls were jointed by Isobel and Libby. The next medal came from Hallie taking the Gold in the 50m breaststroke. With PB's from all so far it was turning out to be a good Open for the team, as these times could be use in the Surrey Development Meet in June. The next medal, a Gold from Hallie in the 100m Breaststroke, and a Gold for Libby in the 50m Butterfly. The medals still kept coming for Libby, a silver in the 50m Freestyle.

Our last Tuesday session at Westcroft will take place on the 24th March. Swimming will resume at Cheam on the 31st March. from 6.30 to 7.30 pm.
Our last Friday session at Westcroft will take place on 27th March and will resume at Cheam on Friday 10th April.
Our presentation night this year is to be held on 10th January at 7.00pm - 10.30pm at St Cecelia's Scout Hall, Rear of St Cecilia's RC Church, St Cecilia's Close, off Stonecot Hill, North Cheam SM3 9HM.
Wine, Beer, Soft drinks and Tuck Shop will be available. Tickets are available at the desk during training sessions or can be purchased on the night.
